The memorial was erected in 1893 to commemorate the reoccupation of Buda Castle on May 21st, 1849. The composition is the work of the sculptor György Zala. On the hard lime-stone pedestal a Hungarian soldier is shown stepping up onto a gun-barrel and holding sword in his right and a flag in his left, with the inscription: "Freedom or death". A winged angel holds a wreath above the soldier's head.
